“How can we get robots to talk like you and me?”

Human-centered robotics requires for sure that there is a form of natural language like interaction with the robot. But how can we achieve this? Natural language is hugely complex. It is an open system that is changing all the time with new words and constructions coming up and others getting out of fashion. Normal sentences are often ungrammatical, fragmented, errorful and incomplete. There is a lot of variation between different speakers due to dialect, age, social class, style. When interacting with robots, dialog will be about objects and actions in the world which implies that the semantics must be grounded in perception and action. All these challenges are enormous and far from met.

I will review the work done in our laboratory to handle some of these challenges. Our approach has been trying to adopt principles from living systems to build robust, open-ended language systems. In contrast with the statistical language processing which is currently fashionable, we do small scale experiments to understand the fundamental principles by which language emerges and propagates in populations through embodied situated language games.
